Cara feelsout of place in Aydindril. She stays for Richard and Kahlan's wedding, but her bones ache with the needto wander, even as somethingelse that is duty and more than that compels her to stay.

But Darken Rahl is alive and in power, and Caraknows him too well to trust that he will let things be. While Richard may becontent to wait, Cara believes that the best defense is to attack before theopponent has a chance to. Waiting has never been something she isgood at.

She has not spoken with them about what happened inthe other worlds. There isno point in allowing things that never actually happened to occupy her mind,though it is hard to shakethe small niggle that all she had to do to escape it was to die. Had sheknown, she would have managed that before Zedd and Shota could bat aneye, saving herself from knowledge she would rather have been without.

To make matters worse, she suspects Zedd has told Richard andKahlan everything he knows, becausethey sometimes give her glances that seem far too knowing. It makes her eye twitch.

One day, Zedd interrupts her while she's sparring with thepalace guards, asking her to accompany him for a meal in the city.

Cara would rather continue with the task at hand - as long asthe guards show this level of incompetence she is never going to be able totrust them to protect Kahlan and Richard properly. She has accepted it as her personalduty to do something about it.

Nevertheless, Zedd is insistent.

"Are yougoing like that?" he says once she has reluctantly agreed.

"What?" Cara says, looking down at herself. She's inher usual leather, and maybe she's a little dusty and sweaty, but Zedd has certainly seen herlooking worse.
“嗯？”卡拉说道，然后低头看了看她自己的装束——她正穿着她平时穿的皮衣。尽管或许她看起来有些脏乱，还出了不少汗，但是佐德肯定早就看过她更加脏乱不堪的样子了。
"Don't you want to wash off first?" Zedd says, andCara narrows her eyes.
“你难道不想先洗一洗吗？”佐德说道，卡拉眯起眼睛。
"No," she says. "I don't."
“不要。”她说道，“我不想洗。”
Zedd's sighis a little exasperated. "Fine. I suppose it'll do."
佐德有些无奈地叹了口气：“行吧，希望这样没问题。”
"Do for what?"
“什么没问题？”
Zedd just smiles secretively. It'sthe most ominous thing Cara has seen in a while.
佐德神秘地笑了笑，卡拉觉得有种不好的预感。
